Our years of experience offering 24/7 support, information, and advocacy for people in abusive relationships have been informed by the hard realities of domestic violence. Relationship abuse is ugly, even (and especially) when it comes from the people we love. The more informed we keep ourselves and others, the more prepared we’ll be to recognize and stop abuse when it happens.
On average, more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the US will experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner.
1 in 10 high school students has experienced physical violence from a partner in the last year alone. Statistics like these demand that we all commit ourselves to ending abuse for good.

Law enforcement statistics
Who Will Help Me?, a study by The Hotline and Professor TK Logan at the University of Kentucky surveying women who contacted The Hotline, found that they all shared a strong reluctance to turn to law enforcement for help, regardless of whether or not they had already interacted with police.
- 1 in 4 women reported that they wouldn’t call the police in the future; more than half said that calling the police would make things worse.
- Two thirds or more said they were afraid the police wouldn’t believe them or do anything to intervene.
- Studies have found that law enforcement families experience domestic violence at rates as high as 40%; sexual abuse among law enforcement ranks second in all forms of police misconduct.
