History of the Fountain Tallman Museum
The El Dorado County Historical Society was founded in 1938 as a private non-profit organization. It is a volunteer group of generous and dedicated members of the community, who are active throughout El Dorado County.
Since its incorporation, the financial strength of EDCHS has come first from its strong membership base and second from the annual donations received from its supporters. If you currently are not a member, please consider joining and continuing the legacy of 78 years of continuous service to the County.
See the membership package (below) currently offered as part of the Society’s partnership with the El Dorado Western Railroad (“the living history program of the El Dorado County Historical Museum”) including the discounts on merchandise purchased at the Fountain & Tallman and County Historical Museums. El Dorado County Historical Museum
The El Dorado County Historical Society was founded in 1938 to collect and preserve historical relics, historical items and information about El Dorado County, and to provide a suitable home for these items,” as reported in the Mountain Democrat on September 14, 1938. The Society lobbied for establishing the El Dorado County Historical Museum, located next to the County Fairgrounds, which was built in 1973 and filled with artifacts collected by the Society over the years.
Today, the Historical Society and County Museum are two separate places. The Society is a registered not-for-profitorganization with a Board of Directors and members. The County Museum is a county facility andpart of the County Library Department, with exhibits and archives.

Junior Researcher Program
The brochure format activity sheets below combine some of the artifacts and displays in the County Museum with Common Core study standards in our state’s education system.
It is a project meant to provide educators, whether at home or in school, with a tool to introduce and encourage their students and families to explore primary source history in their own town.
Many questions in these student brochures are designed for discussion and thought.
Each brochure activity includes a mini-certificate. Filled out when the student has toured the museum, with or without a docent guide, it offers the educator a tool to teach history and a certificate to indicate completion of an extra-credit assignment if he or she wishes. Museum docents will fill out the certificate and encourage further interest in the many aspects of history and research available to our young visitors.
Visit the El Dorado County Historical Museum with your children and participate in the Junior Researcher Program.
